Learning, Earning and Living CK

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent's Community Attraction and Promotion area was awarded funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs' (OMAFRA) Rural Economic Development (RED) grant in 2022 to lead the Learning, Earning, and LivingCK project activities. While Chatham-Kent's population has grown by 2.2% since 2016, projections for continued growth do not meet demand for employees locally. Workforce projections by the Western Ontario Warden's Caucus' Workforce Strategy show a 6% workforce increase by 2030 for Chatham-Kent. This project supports enhanced career planning and talent pipeline building to future-proof CK's workforce by engaging local students (grades 7 to post-secondary), and increased talent attraction for existing job openings by connecting both internal and external jobseekers with employers, digitally and in-person.

The key components of the Learning, Earning, and LivingCK project are:

  • Capacity-building workshops with employers to enhance talent attraction and retention efforts with key talent pools
  • Learning, Earning, and LivingCK talent attraction marketing campaign targeting jobseekers across Southwestern Ontario to the Greater Toronto Area
  • Learning, Earning, and LivingCK Career Expo and Job Fair being hosted on October 18 and 19, 2023 at the John D. Bradley Convention Center

CK-based employers from across sectors will connect with students, and local and external jobseekers directly at the two-day event on October 18 and 19, 2023, and have been engaged in capacity-building activities and marketing efforts throughout the year to enhance their talent attraction and retention efforts. Workshops hosted to-date as part of the Learning, Earning, and LivingCK project are:

  • Intergenerational Workshop – Gens through the Lens with Michelle Schurter, Millennial Strategist on May 16, 2023
  • Intercultural Competency Four-Part Series with WILL Immploy, from April 17 – May 31, 2023
  • Labour Market Information Session with CK Workforce Planning & Research on September 19, 2023
  • Discover Chatham-Kent – Resettlement Webinar with Newcomer Centre of Peel and immigrant talent on September 20, 2023
